Taking Action... People Before Profit Charter vs British Gas
Protesters: People Before Profit Charter Target: British Gas Location: British Gas HQ, Cardiff Date: 27 September
- The lowdown
Members of the People Before Profit Charter gathered outside the British Gas HQ in Cardiff to protest against energy price rises. The group hoped its demonstration would launch a public debate on the 'failing economy'. The protest was supported by local trade union leaders and Plaid Cymru Assembly Member Leanne Wood made a speech.
- Why the protest?
British Gas raised its electricity and gas prices by nine per cent and 35 per cent respectively in July. The protestors believe these price hikes were unnecessary because parent company Centrica announced more than £1bn in annual profits a day later. The group called for the re-nationalisation of British Gas and a windfall tax on their profits.
- How did British Gas respond?
It said it was widely recognised as the leading energy supplier. A spokesperson told the BBC: 'We have already committed £900m of energy efficiency measures for our customers' homes over the next three years and a further £160m to help our most vulnerable customers.'
- How did the media cover it?
The BBC used the headline 'Gas protest aims to ignite debate,' and gave both sides the opportunity to air their view. The Edinburgh Evening News also covered the event, quoting the demo organiser and a protester.
