The Week in Charities
Age Concern has signed up a raft of celebrities as part of a campaign to improve nutritional standards on hospital wards. TV actor Steve Mangan is among the celebrities who took part in three viral video clips aimed at stamping out malnutrition of older people on hospital wards.
Burma Campaign UK has prompted three major insurers to pull out of the Burmese insurance market. Following the charity's report Insuring Repression (PRWeek, 31 July), Arab Insurance Group, XL Capital and Chubb Corporation have announced plans to withdraw.
The Family Welfare Association has changed its name to Family Action following a £25,000 re-branding exercise. The charity, which provides services to disadvantaged families, believed funders, staff and service commissioners ditched the word 'welfare' as it was seen as having negative and stigmatising implications by service users.
RNIB is using the media interest in the final of Big Brother to argue for equality for blind people. Blind contestant Mikey and partially sighted contestant Darnell have 'dispelled myths and increased understanding of the challenges blind and partially sighted people experience, as well as what they can achieve', it said.
