28 September - Here is my take on how to get started in understanding social media: 1. Set up google alerts for terms of interest - even generic ones like 'online PR' or 'social media' bring interesting results. 2. Get FeedDemon or a similar RSS feed and start subscribing to blogs. 3. Join Twitter. Honestly, you have to. The more you use it, the more you get out of it. 4. Start a blog - it gives you an idea of how blogs work and their etiquette, which is vital if you're a PR person hoping to target bloggers.

24 September - I'm not a huge fan of the Interbrand global study as its methodology means many large private companies get left out but it is nevertheless useful. This year's study shows that tech brands continue to play an increasingly important role, while not surprisingly financial services brands are struggling. I'd love to see how much these brands spent on PR and advertising.

SIMPSON - 09-Oct-08

A lot of PR firms are talking about the importance of digital marketing. Yet a study by our client StatCounter found that almost half or 49% of the Top 150 PR Week companies do not have an online website tracker. I'm ashamed to admit we didn't either until we met StatCounter. Now we can measure hits to our site and see where they are coming from - and it's free!
